The Food and Drug Administration issued a green light Monday for the use of certain prescription medications like Cialis and Levitra in children aged under 6 years.
The drug, which treats erectile dysfunction, is only approved to be used for the treatment of adult men who have an enlarged prostate or high blood pressure.
The FDA’s new drug label warns against using these medicines for more than six months, after the agency said the drugs are not approved for use in children.
The warning comes after an FDA study found that men who took the drugs had a 50 percent higher chance of having problems with erections, compared with men who took an placebo.
“While the findings may not be true for all men, the risk of ED is still present,” said Janet Woodcock, the FDA’s medical director.
The agency is considering additional studies to determine how well Cialis and Levitra can treat erectile dysfunction, but Woodcock did not recommend taking the drugs for more than six months.
The drug, which treats high blood pressure and angina, is only approved for use in children.
The FDA does not currently have information about how many children under the age of 6 have ED.
A study of men who took sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis) for erectile dysfunction in the 1970s found that men who took the drugs were three times more likely to have trouble achieving an erection than men who did not take the drugs. That suggests that taking the drugs for six months can help reduce some of the symptoms of ED.
The FDA’s new drug label also warns against using these medications for more than six months. The label says a doctor should discuss any changes in blood pressure or heart rate that may be making them unsuitable for use in children.
In a written statement, FDA Chairman ScottPages said, “The FDA is taking serious risk to weigh the risks against the benefits and will do all it can to ensure everyone who takes prescription drugs for ED remains safe and effective.”
The FDA has not received any comment from the agency.
